Brys Estate Vineyards and Winery

Origin Story

Walter and Eileen Brys met on a blind date in Detroit in 1968, and were married shortly after. A spontaneous trip to the Napa Valley in the early 1970s sparked a dream they couldn’t shake. Although starting a winery was virtually impossible for them at the time, their dream endured, growing stronger with each passing year. They wanted to be winemakers.

Throughout the 1980s and 90s, Walt enjoyed a successful career in real estate development while Eileen stayed at home raising their three children. When the kids left the nest, the couple retired to Florida. But retirement quickly felt, well, too quiet. Their long-dormant dream resurfaced, and they knew the time had finally come to start a winery.

In 2000, after nearly two years of searching for the perfect location, the Bryses turned their attention north to the Old Mission Peninsula, just outside Traverse City, Michigan. They chose an 1890s homestead with 80 acres, complete with an aging cherry orchard, four barns, and migrant quarters—all in need of significant restoration. The pair set out to convert the farmhouse into their dream home, as well as transform the abandoned cherry orchard into a lush vineyard.

In 2004, the estate’s first 10,000 vines produced their first harvest, and the tasting room opened to the public in 2005. Today, under the leadership of their son Patrick, the estate has expanded to 155 acres with 53,000 vines on the Old Mission Peninsula.

How They Started

Spanning 155 acres, Brys Estate is the largest contiguous winery estate on the Old Mission Peninsula, just north of Traverse City. Opened in 2005, we’re a family-run business that crafts wines from 53,000 vines planted less than a mile from Lake Michigan. The Brys experience includes an old-world tasting room, unique elevated Upper Deck with panoramic views of our expansive vineyards and East Grand Traverse Bay, a Private Guesthouse, Lawn Bar, and serene Secret Garden.

Mission Statement

At Brys Estate…

We are traditional… yet unconventional. We embrace the proven techniques and practices of our industry’s predecessors, while not being afraid to challenge convention when we see an opportunity. Years ago, when other local vintners were espousing white wines, we seized the moment and committed to creating the region’s finest reds. We believe great wine is the result of pushing the land to its limit – without compromising its integrity – allowing it to reach a potential few would think possible.

We are a family… that welcomes everyone as family. We seek to share our love of the land and its bounty. We like to educate our visitors about our wines and their origins, so they too feel a natural connection to the wine they savor. We love to laugh, share stories, and celebrate special moments in people’s lives. After all, wine is about people, place, and passion.

We are a promise… of quality. A promise supported by always doing things the right way – nurturing our plants year after year, hand harvesting grapes from our own land, and lovingly handcrafting our wines in small batches. It’s this promise of quality that is captured in each and every glass to be enjoyed and shared with family and friends.

We put our own name on the bottle because we believe deeply in what’s inside.

We are Brys Estate. A tradition, a family, a promise.
