Origin Story
Nestled in the heart of Michigan’s scenic Old Mission Peninsula, Peninsula Cellars Winery began in the early 1990s as a bold step by the Kroupa family to diversify their century-old farm. With deep agricultural roots and a love for the land, they embraced the emerging viticulture scene, recognizing the region’s cool climate and rich soils as ideal for growing grapes like Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay.
Driven by a passion for quality and a sense of place, the Kroupas transformed their farm into a welcoming winery rooted in sustainability, family values, and community. What started as a humble venture soon blossomed into a beloved destination, known for award-winning wines, local collaborations, and rustic charm.
Today, Peninsula Cellars remains family-owned, blending tradition and innovation to craft wines that embody the essence of northern Michigan — a living tribute to the Kroupa family’s enduring vision and the beauty of Old Mission Peninsula.

Brand Story
Our tasting room is a converted one-room schoolhouse which was built around 1896. The maple Grove School retains its original windows, floors, slate chalk boards, light fixtures and bell. The building was utilized until the mid 1950’s, when the schools consolidated with the Traverse City Public School system.
The building sat vacant for a few years until it was purchased by a local artist who used it as a studio. Later, the schoolhouse was purchased in hopes of turning it into a home like many of the other area one room schoolhouses. Dave and Joan Kroupa bought the schoolhouse in 1998 and transformed it into the tasting room for Peninsula Cellars, moving out of their former location which is the current Old Mission General Store. It is now the only one room school house open to the public that remains on Old Mission Peninsula.
Our production facilities are located a short six miles north on the centennial Kroupa farm. The farm consists of 300 acres of cherry and apple orchards, and vineyards. Today, Dave and Joan’s son, John Kroupa, is the sixth generation to own and manage the Kroupa farm. The rich history of both the Maple Grove school house and Kroupa family are what make us Peninsula Proud®.
